The Constitution of the Geography Society

Article One

The official name of the organization shall be “The Geography Society”.

Article Two

The Geography Society shall strive to acquaint Geography majors and those interested, in cultural, physical, and social aspects of Geography through community activities, field trips, involvement in geography meetings with professional geographers, and socializing among majors and other students on campus.

Article Three

Membership in The Geography Society shall be open to any enrolled student, faculty, or staff member of The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Article Four

The Geography Society shall have three offices: The President or Co-Presidents, the Vice-President, and the Secretary-Treasurer. Each shall be chosen for a term of one year by a majority vote at the first meeting of the Society at the beginning of each school year. The President or Co-Presidents shall be the presiding officer(s) at meetings and preside over all Society functions. The Vice-President shall be responsible for the Society’s publicity and carrying out all other important duties indicative of the office. The Secretary/Treasurer shall be responsible for the collection of money at meetings for the payment of expenses incurred by the Society and the coordination of field trips.
The Geography Society shall also have a Special Activities Committee consisting of two to four Society members being responsible for coordinating club projects and assisting the officers of the Society, if needed.

Article Five

The faculty advisor for The Geography Society shall be a tenure track professor in the Geography program. The advisor shall serve as a consultant for club projects.

Article Six

The Geography Society shall not collect dues from members, but shall request funds from members for special activities according to need.

Article Seven

General meetings of The Geography Society shall occur at least once a month during the academic semester. A quorum shall consist of two officers, two committee members, and at least five regular members. The senior officer present shall be the presiding officer.
Amendments to the Constitution require a two-thirds majority vote to be enacted. An amendment can only be considered at a meeting where a quorum exists.

Article Eight

Roberts’ Rules of Order shall serve as a guide to parliamentary procedure when necessary.

Article Nine

Should The Geography Society become defunct, the organization’s assets will be turned over to the faculty advisor. Should the faculty advisor be unable to maintain the assets of the organization, they will be disbursed to the Department of Political Science and Geography at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Article Ten

The Geography Society accepts and agrees to abide by all University policies and local, state, and federal law.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD COURSE

GEOGRAPHY OF THE AMERICAN

SOUTHWEST

When: Maymester (May 12-23, 2008)

Instructor: Dr. Robert Garza, physical geographer with extensive teaching experience at UTSA, SAC, and Houston area colleges and universities

Credit: Earn 6 hours of upper division credit

Courses: Grg 4953.01M Physical Geography of the American Southwest Field Course

Grg 4953.02M Cultural Geography of the American Southwest Field Course

Schedule: May 12-16 (M-F) (8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.) Classroom study of the American Southwest and preparation of travel log.

May 17-23 (Sat.-Fri.) The field trip portion of the course will entail the study of the physical and cultural geography of west Texas, central New Mexico, the four corners area, and the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area.

Trip Destinations:

The field trip will include visits to sites such as the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, the Four Corners area, the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area, the Judge Roy Bean’s Law West of the Pecos Historic Site, and the Pecos River Gorge, Texas.

Travel Expenses: $225 plus food expenses. Travel will be in rented

vans. We will be camping at KOA campgrounds.

Commentary: This course is considered a capstone course in geography, an opportunity to see how the principles of physical and cultural geography play out on a rich and historic landscape. It is an intensive field experience that is unforgettable (just ask students who have taken the course!).
